Help with Networking

Network Help?

I have a desktop with windows xp home and a laptop with windows media center. I have tried to network them both to share files and printer between them both. Does the fact that they are diffrent edition make any diffrence and how do i establish the network the easiest way? I already have a router ans dsl. The desktop has a floppy drive where the network data wants to saved but the laptop doesn't. Please help?

1. I suggest using a free download, Network Magic. I networked my Windows media center, 2000, 98, and XP with it. http://networkmagic.com/
